A much-anticipated ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit gives patent owners a shot at extending a patent's life to compensate for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's administrative delays in processing the patent.

The court's Jan. 7 panel ruling in Wyeth v. Kappos upholds a September 2008 ruling in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
