A recent HR Hero Line article discusses the dilemma HR professionals encounter between solving workplace disputes or empowering others to handle workplace issues on their own. Sterne Kessler's Director of Human Resources Cynthia M. Schuler advises HR professionals to strike a balance between the two and avoid "the perception of being the complaint department or dumping ground for everyone and anyone in the organization."
Ms. Schuler argues that HR should help train managers and employees to resolve conflict amongst themselves. However, she emphasizes the importance of HR involvement in legal disputes including harassment, discrimination, pay, and other legal topics.
