Mr. Merrell is an Associate in the Electronics Group.  His practice includes patent prosecution and PTO litigation. His prosecution work is primarily focused on preparation and prosecution of patent applications. His Patent Office Litigation practice includes inter partes reviews.

Mr. Merrell's technological experience spans numerous areas, including medical devices, digital healthcare, computer architecture, data processing, network communications, data generation, and software/business methods.

Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Mr. Merrell drafted and prosecuted patents stemming from a wide-range of technologies, including: application software, lighting systems and devices, optical systems, laser systems, alternative fuels, and medical device technologies for both diagnostics and treatment. Additionally, he acted as a contracted International Search Agent, wherein he analyzed PCT patent applications by conducting a patentability search on behalf of the USPTO, performing claim-by-claim analyses, and preparing an international search report for PCT applications.  Mr. Merrell analyzed PCT applications in the following technologies: computer architecture, application and system software, data processing (vehicles, navigation, simulations, speech/audio, artificial intelligence, and database management), network communications, cryptography, information storage, information management and security, memory and memory circuits, and data generation.

During law school, Mr. Merrell was named Best Advocate of the Southern Region at the Giles Sutherland Rich moot court competition on patent law. He also served as Chief Justice of UNH Law's Moot Court Board. Further, Mr. Merrell participated in the International Technology Transfer Institute at UNH Law where he helped create two extensive biotechnological patent studies relating to HIV and Dengue Fever diagnostic and treatment technologies.
